45 Years of Vins el Cep: Four Families and a Project Rooted in the Land

A winery with its own identity that today looks ahead under the leadership of the second generation This year we celebrate the 45th anniversary of Vins el Cep, reaffirming the vocation with which it was born: to craft wines and sparkling wines that authentically and excellently express our Espiells terroirs, the historic vineyard area where the project took root. Since 1980, the winery has upheld a firm commitment to the land and to respecting the viticultural landscape. The project emerged from the union of four wine-growing families from Sant Llorenç d’Hortons and Gelida: the Carreras (Can Prats), Esteve (Can Simon), Masana (Can Castany), and Parera (Can Miquel de les Planes).

Vins el Cep returns to the origins of the Penedès recovering an autochthonous variety such as Xarel-lo Vermell. Pla del Bosc represents the identity of a unique thirty year old vineyard that is elaborated maintaining the most traditional bases.

Vins el Cep is still committed to the territory, the uniqueness of the vineyard and the 100% own elaboration.

The prestigious and renowned British magazine Decanter has included in its list of Best Biodynamic Wines of 2022 the Cava Claror “Paratge Qualificat” Can Prats de Vins el Cep, the only sparkling wine of the state within this list.

In addition to accrediting that 100% of the base wine to make cava has been pressed and vinified on the estate, the mention of “integral producer” proves that 100% of the cavas are made on the property and that bottles are not bought in stacks or sûr pointe (neck-down) from other winemakers.

In 1980, we started a common project to create wines and cavas to represent the identity of our terroirs.

Today, these are cultivated following the principles of ecological and biodynamic agriculture, where the land, plants, animals and man work together to improve and preserve the natural balance of the ecosystem.

We have to be grateful to the benign weather of our Penedés, to give us the possibility of having an excellent 2019 harvest.

An ideal climate, moderate rainfall and a good evolution of the grape in the last vegetative cycle allowed a harvest marked by a very good quality. The grapes ripened very well and were very healthy. The balance between temperatures and rainfall allowed harvesting a grape with optimal conditions and producing high quality wines. A catalog harvest. We started on August 14th with the Pinot Noir and finished on September 25th with the Cabernet Sauvignon.
