BIODYNAMICS: PIONEERS AND ADVOCATES

Throughout our history, each generation has played its part, bringing innovations and the wisdom of knowing how to observe and reflect. In 2000, with the experience derived from this direct contact with the land, we decided to go down the path of organic farming.

Not long afterwards, determined to keep improving on all levels, we took things a step further and implemented biodynamic agriculture. Although this type of farming was uncommon in our country at the time, the results spoke for themselves and we decided to fully embrace it. We have never looked back.

Vins El Cep was founded and grew in this landscape of vines and forests that gives it its character. We love our land and that is why we take care of it, listen to, and try to understand it as we work, because we know this is where it all begins: in the soil and in the vines; in the plants and animals which all share the same ecosystem, understand each other and create a natural balance.

From 2003 to the present day, through observation, hard work and commitment, we have continued to work along these lines, striving to achieve the perfect balance between respect for nature and high quality in the winery. Our Claror cava, the first biodynamic cava in the world, is a perfect example of our work.

Everyone knows that wine begins its journey in the vineyard. The character, sentiment and expression of our wines only make sense if the vines become more alive with each passing day.

Our vines are our heritage, the countryside our roots.

TERROIRS AND ESTATES

Going back thousands of years, these lands formed part of the seabed, and, in fact, 500 years ago, vines were already growing here. Our legacy, then, goes back a very long way.

Most of our vines are old, located on the slopes of the Anoia and spread over the municipalities of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, Gelida and Sant Llorenç d’Hortons, in the province of Barcelona. These are vines with a strong personality, a quality needed for our terroir wines.

The grapes grow on gently undulating slopes, crossed by deep streams and embraced by a typically Mediterranean climate with moderately warm and dry summers, mild winters and irregular rainfall. The native varieties, such as Macabeo, Xarel·lo, Parellada and Tempranillo, which occupy most of our vineyards, are joined by non-native varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot or Syrah, which enable us to achieve the desired balance in our blends.

Their moderately deep roots feed from clay-loam soil, which is well structured, porous and contains an active level of fauna. Since our farming is organic and biodynamic, ants, worms, and all kinds of living organisms thrive here, fostering the natural balance.
