45 Years of Vins el Cep: Four Families and a Project Rooted in the Land

A winery with its own identity that today looks ahead under the leadership of the second generation

This year we celebrate the 45th anniversary of Vins el Cep, reaffirming the vocation with which it was born: to craft wines and sparkling wines that authentically and excellently express our Espiells terroirs, the historic vineyard area where the project took root. Since 1980, the winery has upheld a firm commitment to the land and to respecting the viticultural landscape.

The project emerged from the union of four wine-growing families from Sant Llorenç d’Hortons and Gelida: the Carreras (Can Prats), Esteve (Can Simon), Masana (Can Castany), and Parera (Can Miquel de les Planes). Four visionaries who believed that by listening to one another and placing their trust in each other, they could make their shared vision possible. They committed to a project born not only from the land but also from shared life and friendship, convinced that it would grow stronger with time. They decided to pool their efforts with a clear objective: to elevate the value of the grapes they cultivated and transform them into wines that conveyed the uniqueness of the territory with respect and honesty.

The winery’s symbol—four seeds coming together—perfectly represents this journey: the four founding families, the origin and the life, and the shared path that has allowed the creation of a solid, honest, and deeply rooted project.

This spirit of unity and trust is what has allowed Vins El Cep to become the consolidated and meaningful winery it is today, profoundly connected to its land. And it is this same spirit that has been passed on to the second generation, led by the daughters, who continue to propel the project forward. The generational handover is, in itself, living proof of the founders’ intuition: that when there is a will to understand one another, when collaboration and shared purpose guide the way, the result becomes stronger than any path taken alone.

We were the first winery in Penedès to adopt biodynamic viticulture and the creators of the world’s first biodynamic cava, establishing ourselves as an international benchmark in the production of wines with identity. We were also the first to obtain the “Elaborador Integral” distinction, certifying 100% in-house vinification.

With the second generation now at the helm, the project continues to move forward with enthusiasm, respect for our legacy, and a deep commitment to sustainability and the territory. We face the future with the responsibility of continuing to care for our vineyards and recovering native varieties, while our dedication to unique winemakings remains the driving force behind a constant evolution—always faithful to essence and quality.

“At Vins El Cep we have always been certain that our true heritage is this land. This is where our story beats. Today we preserve the same excitement and the same commitment to caring for this territory so that it continues to speak through our wines.” – Maite Esteve.
